Facts and Building List

The Provincial Government has committed to help public agencies better understand and manage their energy consumption.  As part of this commitment, Regulation 397/11 (under the Green Energy Act, 2009) requires certain public agencies—Municipalities, Municipal Service Boards, Schools Boards, Universities, Colleges and Hospitals—to report on their energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually beginning in 2013, and to develop and implement five-year energy conservation and demand management (CDM ) plans starting in 2014.  Our draft CDM plan is also available.

The following table summarizes the University of Ottawa’s report to the Ministry of Energy for the calendar year 2011.  The University of Ottawa has been actively managing energy and emissions since 1995 and has been reporting with a base year of 1993.  Since 1993 our total energy consumption has increased only slightly from 652,000 GJ to 679,000 GJ in spite of dramatic growth of more than 50% in terms of campus building area and enrollment.  In that same period our GHG emissions have been reduced from 29,579 tonnes of eCO2, to 24,698 tonnes of eCO2 or by more than 16%.
